James Abbott McNeill Whistler designed the girl&#8217;s dress and painted her in the same pose as \u00c9douard Manet&#8217;s Lola de Valence 1862. The portrait took over 70 sittings each lasting several hours. Alexander recalled: &#8216;I used to get very tired and cross, and often finished the day in tears.&#8217; The picture was criticised for its departure from the more informal formats usually adopted for child portraiture.
